Why is Trump not granting a Patriot license to Ukraine?
During a cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump stated that granting such high-end technology is an extremely difficult decision. He expressed his hesitation, saying that the United States must exercise extreme caution in sharing its defense technology secrets.
Trump even expressed fears that the country to which this technology is being provided could use it against the United States in the future. He stated that these weapons are unreliable and that we must be very cautious about allowing anyone else to manufacture them.
Did Trump backtrack on his promise to Zelensky?
This statement is in stark contrast to Trump’s previous stance. Previously, during the NATO summit in Turkey on July 8, Trump publicly promised to grant Zelensky a license to manufacture Patriot missiles. Zelensky also claimed after his meeting with Trump on July 28 that the US President had accepted this demand.
However, Trump’s latest stance has dashed Kyiv’s hopes. Currently, only Japan and Germany have the authority to produce these missiles outside the United States.
Russian missiles continue to wreak havoc in Kyiv
Amidst the political uncertainty, the situation on the ground is extremely dire. Russia has launched its second major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv in the past 48 hours. A total of 9 people, including 4 children, were killed and 28 others injured in the attack that occurred early Saturday.
The explosions were so powerful that residential buildings were reduced to rubble and caused widespread chaos throughout the city. According to officials, the Darnitsky and Solomiansky districts suffered the most human casualties.
Demand for Concessions for Peace
Trump also indicated that both Ukraine and Russia would have to make concessions to end the war. He appealed to Zelensky and Putin to move towards a peace agreement.
Meanwhile, President Zelensky spoke with US Vice President J.D. Vance by phone, describing Ukraine’s air defense needs as a top priority and reiterating his demand for additional Patriot interceptors.
