Imphal, Aug 2: A grand reception was held in New Delhi for the Commonwealth Games medallists from Manipur, organized by the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee (DMCC). This event celebrated the achievements of the Indian weightlifting team following their successful campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The athletes arrived at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport around 11:05 a.m., where they were warmly welcomed by DMCC members. The athletes and their coaches were recognized for their contributions to both Manipur and the nation.

The Indian weightlifting team consisted of 16 members, including 11 athletes and five coaches, with six representatives hailing from Manipur. Notable athletes included Olympic medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, along with Bindyarani Devi, Nirupama, Martina, Rishikanta Singh, and coach Nafisha.

Manipuri lifters played a crucial role in India's weightlifting success, with Mirabai Chanu winning gold, Rishikanta Singh earning silver, and Bindyarani Devi taking home bronze in their respective categories.

During the reception, Rishikanta Singh, who won a silver medal, shared that his primary focus is on recovering from an injury that affected his performance. He is preparing for the Asian Games, set to commence on October 4.

"My first step is to heal from the pain and physical issues. Once I am fully recovered, I will start training again. This will be my debut at the Asian Games, so I need to prepare thoroughly with the help of my doctors and coaches," he stated.

Rishikanta expressed that winning the silver medal brought great happiness to his family, especially his father, and he hopes for a return to peace in Manipur.

"I also wish for peace to return to Manipur. With peace, many more talented athletes will emerge from our state," he added.

Manipur's influence on India's medal tally was not limited to weightlifting; boxer Mandengbam Jadumani Singh also secured a silver in the men's 55kg category.

Overall, athletes from Manipur contributed to four of India's medals at the Glasgow Games, further solidifying the state's status as a prominent sports hub in the country.

Members of the DMCC congratulated the athletes, emphasizing that their achievements have once again showcased Manipur's rich sporting heritage, particularly in weightlifting. They extended their best wishes for future international competitions, especially the upcoming Asian Games.
