In July 2026, UPI recorded 2,366 crore transactions, a new record. Meanwhile, the number and total value of FASTag transactions declined both year-on-year and month-on-month during the same period.

New Delhi: UPI set a new record for digital payments in July 2026, with both the number of transactions and total transaction value increasing. Meanwhile, FASTag transactions under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) network saw a decline, leading to a decline in toll payment figures.

UPI transactions set a new record

In July 2026, 23.66 billion transactions were recorded through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the highest monthly figure ever. This number was 22.72 billion in June 2026. This represents a 4.1 percent increase in UPI transactions in the month, compared to a 22 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The total value of transactions also saw an increase. Payments made through UPI in July amounted to ₹29.88 lakh crore, compared to ₹28.92 lakh crore in June. However, this was slightly lower than the nearly ₹29.9 lakh crore recorded in May.

Average daily payments exceed 76 crores

UPI usage continues to grow. An average of 763 million transactions were processed daily in July, up from 757 million in June. The average daily transaction value was approximately ₹96,383 crore, almost equal to the previous month’s level.

Experts believe that its usage is continuously increasing due to government initiatives promoting digital payments, increasing penetration of smartphones and internet and expansion of UPI based services.

Decline in FASTag transactions

While UPI set a new record, National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) FASTag figures declined. There were 347 million FASTag transactions in July, compared to 362 million in June. This represents a 4.1 percent monthly decrease and nearly 6 percent year-on-year decrease.

The total value of transactions also declined. Payments made through FASTag in July were worth ₹7,143 crore, compared to ₹7,215 crore in June and ₹7,308 crore in May.

The growing global reach of UPI

UPI was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is a real-time digital payment system that allows instant money transfers between bank accounts.

Beyond India, UPI usage is now growing in many countries. Indian travelers can make merchant payments through UPI in countries like Singapore, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, France, Cambodia, and the Seychelles. This continues to strengthen the global acceptance of the Indian digital payment system.
