For a while, Entharo Mahanubhavalu, Poove Poove and iconic punch dialogues dominated social media every time a Malayalam classic returned to theatres. Sphadikam rekindled the nostalgia, while Devadoothan proved that even an initial box-office failure could find a second life. While exhibitors say re-releases help fill programming gaps when the release calendar is thin, as more yesteryear films make their way back to the big screen, one thing is becoming increasingly clear — nostalgia alone isn't enough to guarantee packed houses.
'Several re-releases couldn't even retain their shows'
Kerala Film Chamber president Anil Thomas believes that when it comes to re-releases, success stories remain exceptions rather than the rule. "Beyond two or three films, re-releases haven't made a major impact. When even new films struggle, we can't expect old films to consistently outperform them. Several re-releases couldn't even retain their shows. I wouldn't call it a healthy trend." he says.
'It's not just about nostalgia'
Industry insiders believe the biggest draw is simple: audiences must feel they're getting an experience they couldn't recreate at home. "If it's an already successful film, there's a fan base to build on. Songs that have become a vibe, memorable dialogues and mass moments naturally pull audiences back for the theatrical experience . If it's a film that had failed initially, like Devadoothan, convincing people becomes much harder" says marketing and PR professional P Sivaprasad, who has handled more than eight re-releases in Kerala.
Producer Khader Hassan, who brought Happy back to theatres and is planning to re-release Happy Days, agrees. "I always ask myself whether the film has enough pull to make people step into a theatre again. It's not just about nostalgia; there has to be something unique about the theatrical experience. That was the advantage with Happy. We found an element that resonated with youngsters," he says.
Producer Shermeen Siyad, who re-released Devadoothan and Summer In Bethlehem , says audience feedback usually centres on two things. "People appreciate the technical quality of the restoration. Many who came for Summer in Bethlehem had already watched it countless times on television, and simply wanted to experience it on the big screen," he says.
'Mass entertainers, not serious dramas, perform better'
Even acclaimed classics with glossy restoration, like 4K conversion and Atmos sound, aren't guaranteed a successful second innings. Sivaprasad points to Kireedam . "It's a National Award-winning film, but because it's a serious drama, convincing people becomes a challenge. We highlighted the 4K restoration during promotions and saw footfall improve from Day Three. The same happened with Nayagan and Amaram. With Chotta Mumbai, however, the commercial elements made marketing much easier," he shares.
According to exhibitors, the biggest crowd-pullers continue to be films that encourage audience participation. "Mass entertainers featuring stars like Allu Arjun and Vijay naturally perform better because audiences sing, cheer and celebrate together. But that is also limited to certain areas, mostly cities. We don't see the same collections in rural areas or smaller towns for re-releases," says Jacob BR, president of the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK).
Why audiences keep coming back
For many viewers, the attraction isn't simply revisiting a favourite film. "It's about experiencing it the way it was meant to be seen," says Rohini S, who watched Manichithrathazhu during its re-release. "The versions we'd watched at home were grainy and faded. Watching it in a theatre with restored visuals and hearing those songs on a proper sound system completely changed the experience," she shares.

Spadikam ₹4.90cr
Manichithrathazhu ₹4.60cr
Ravana Prabhu ₹4.30cr
