Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will make her first public appearance before the media in India, nearly two years after her government was ousted. She will participate in a virtual event in New Delhi on August 5, where she will discuss her future plans and the possibility of returning to Bangladesh.
The event is being organised by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia. The event will be held from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Sir Mark Tully Auditorium, Mathura Road, New Delhi. It will also be live-streamed on the club’s social media platforms.
The event is being held to mark the second anniversary of the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule. The student movement that began on August 5, 2024, against the reservation system turned into a nationwide anti-government movement. Following the occupation of government buildings and violent incidents by protesters, Sheikh Hasina was forced to leave Bangladesh and return to India, ending her nearly 16-year rule. After coming to India, Sheikh Hasina maintained a distance from public events and the media. This is believed to be her first major public speech after leaving power.
Sheikh Hasina will be joined by several prominent Bangladeshi political leaders, former ministers, diplomats and analysts at the event. These include her son and former ICT advisor to Bangladesh Sajib Wazed Joy, former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nofel, Bangladesh Human Rights Watch Secretary General Mohammad Ali Siddiqui, former cricketer and former MP Shakib Al Hasan, former diplomat and security expert Aminul Haque Polash, political and counter-terrorism analyst Abu Obaida Arin and Bangladesh Human Rights Watch USA Director Shah Mohammad Bakhtiar.
