Tamil Nadu politics witnessed a major development on Tuesday morning when opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested by police at his Chennai residence for allegedly making offensive remarks about actor Trisha . During the arrest, Udhayanidhi Stalin was seen smiling as he walked away with the police and said he considered the action a “joke” and would fight it legally.
The controversy erupted after a speech he delivered during a protest in Thanjavur on Monday. Udhayanidhi Stalin allegedly made a double-meaning remark when the crowd called out actor Trisha’s name, sparking a political controversy.
DMK called it political vendetta
The DMK has called the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin an act of political vendetta. Party leader T.K.S. Elangovan stated that Udhayanidhi did not insult anyone by name and that his speech was limited to criticizing Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s policies. He alleged that the action was aimed at suppressing the opposition.
TVK and BJP supported
Meanwhile, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) justified the arrest. Party leader Amrikai Narayanan said that Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested not for any political remarks, but for allegedly making derogatory remarks against a woman. He said that using such language from a public platform is against the dignity of women.
TVK filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) and also filed a police case. The complaint stated that using double-meaning and derogatory words against a woman on a public platform promotes disrespectful behavior towards women.
The Tamil Nadu BJP also reacted strongly to the incident, demanding the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin. BJP leaders described his remarks as indecent, vulgar, and contrary to the dignity of public life.
How did the controversy start?
On Monday, Udhayanidhi Stalin was targeting the state government at a protest rally regarding the Cauvery water dispute. Someone in the crowd mentioned actress Trisha’s name. Following this, Udhayanidhi allegedly made an offensive and double-meaning remark, which drew widespread criticism on social media and political parties described it as an issue to women’s dignity.
The matter has been in controversy before
This isn’t the first time actress Trisha’s name has been embroiled in political controversy. Previously, various political leaders have made public comments about her personal life and her relationship with actor-turned-politician Vijay. Trisha’s legal team has filed objections in those cases as well.
legal process ongoing
Police have currently detained Udhayanidhi Stalin and initiated further legal proceedings. Udhayanidhi has clarified that he will challenge this action in court. This entire incident has sparked a new controversy in Tamil Nadu politics. While the DMK is calling it political vendetta, opposition parties are considering it a serious matter involving the dignity of women.
