The Punjab Congress is experiencing a continuous turmoil. Charanjit Singh Channi’s faction appears to be in an all-out war of words and is demanding Raja Warring’s removal from the post of president. Given the gravity of the situation, in-charge Bhupesh Baghel is also visiting every district in Punjab to gather feedback, but Channi supporters are disrupting his events. Similar scenes have emerged from various districts over the past several days. However, Raja Warring appeared confident that his position was secure and spoke of keeping the Congress united. However, some of his statements yesterday have sparked a new political debate. 

For the past month, Raja Warring has been dismissive of the ongoing backlash against him. Those close to him believed that Channi’s camp would calm down after a few days of protests, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Now, Raja Warring’s demeanor appears to have changed. He is recounting his achievements, making emotional appeals, and even appearing angry. Previously, he had been responding calmly and with measured words. Some political analysts interpret this behavior as a sign of change. 

Got emotional in Muktsar

Raja Warring appeared emotional during a Congress event in Sri Muktsar Sahib. He said, “Today I have found peace here because I have come home.” He said, “Everyone wants to capture and kill your son. The Akali Dal and the BJP are a broom, but even some of our own people have become strangers. But I have not committed any crime. My crime is that for four years, when we had 80 seats, we were reduced to 18. Is that my fault? Captain Amarinder Singh defeated the government twice, and from 80, we were reduced to 18.”

Raja Warring reminded Congress of its dark days and how it suffered a crushing defeat in 2022, with Channi failing to win even one of his two seats. “Hats off to the people of Gidderbaha, they made me win one seat, otherwise, Malwa would have lost one more seat, and Congress would have been reduced to 17 seats,” said Raja Warring.

What did he say on the resignation?

Raja Warring has now stated clearly that he will not resign. A journalist asked him whether he would resign in light of the opposition. Raja Warring became angry. He said, “We worked for four years and won seven Lok Sabha seats. If I am removed, I will work to strengthen the Congress. If you face opposition on your channel, will you leave?” When journalists asked him the same question again, Raja Warring said clearly that he would not resign.

Why did you change your attitude?

Raja Warring’s attitude seems to have changed. He is now constantly touting his successes among party workers and from the party platform. He even spoke emotionally in Muktsar. Some are even considering this a sign of losing his position. Political experts believe that Raja Warring is now facing the threat of losing his position. Consequently, his statements and attitude appear to have changed. It is believed that Raja Warring is trying to convey to the Congress high command that he has struggled a lot for the party. 

The Channi camp has been continuously demanding the removal of Raja Warding. Despite this, the high command has so far appeared to be siding with Raja Warding, but after continued protests, it is now believed that the decision may be reconsidered. Bhupesh Baghel is expected to submit a report to the high command in Delhi on August 9th.
