What Manchester United now intend to do with Marcus Rashford has become clear, with Michael Carrick and INEOS not seeing eye to eye on the matter.

The initial plan for Rashford and his future was to sell him to Barcelona through the €30m / £26m option to buy that was included in last season’s loan agreement.

Personal terms had already been agreed, with Rashford accepting a pay cut to help complete the move.

But Barcelona eventually decided against activating the option and instead signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for £69m.

Manchester United kept looking at possible exit routes after the Barcelona deal collapsed. The existence of a £40m release clause – available to every club except Liverpool and Manchester City – meant putting together a transfer was relatively straightforward.

However, that clause expired on July 15 without any club stepping forward. Since then, interest in signing Rashford has come from Fenerbahce, as well as clubs in MLS and Saudi Arabia, but Rashford has no interest in moving to Turkey, the USA or Saudi Arabia.

The situation has left both Rashford’s future and Manchester United’s plans to sign a new left winger hanging in the balance. No addition in that position will be made if Rashford, along with his £325,000-a-week base salary, remains on the books.

Now, fresh details have emerged on what may lie ahead for Rashford.

It has been revealed that Michael Carrick is ‘genuinely excited’ by the idea of managing Rashford, and the United boss does not actually want him to leave.

Neither Carrick nor any member of his coaching staff are concerned in the slightest that Rashford earns far more than the next highest-paid player in the squad.

That view differs from the club’s key decision-makers, who are still exploring ways for Rashford to leave. He is now the club’s top earner following Casemiro’s departure.

In the end, it appears Carrick is likely to get his wish, with Rashford shutting the door on moves to what are viewed as lesser leagues.

The report added that Barcelona still retain an interest in Rashford, though after signing Gordon, the only deal they would consider is another loan, something Manchester United have no intention whatsoever of accepting.

As a result, the new plan is not only for Rashford to be brought back into the first-team fold, but also for him to become an important figure in Carrick’s starting eleven.

TEAMtalk stated: ‘As things stand, Rashford is expected to remain at Old Trafford, and the internal plan is for him to become a significant part of Carrick’s first-team project.’

The first move in that process will be Rashford reporting to Carrington for pre-season training, which is expected to happen this week.

In addition, the report said Rashford is ‘expected to be involved’ in United’s upcoming friendly against back-to-back Champions League winners PSG on Saturday, August 8.

Unless there is a late U-turn, Rashford will still be a Manchester United player after the summer transfer window shuts, and in Carrick he has a manager who is more than willing to put him straight into the starting line-up.
