The murder of a 16-year-old girl in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Saturday night has shocked the entire area. The girl’s body was found in her home in the Aloichora area, near National Highway 6, within the jurisdiction of the Katlichera police station. The family alleges that she was brutally raped and then murdered. Let’s find out the full story.

When did this incident happen?

Family members had gone to a nearby relative’s house for a feast. The victim was also present, but after a minor altercation with a cousin, she returned home around 10:30 p.m. The family had planned to bring her food later. But when they returned home about an hour later, they were stunned to find her body. The mother, shocked by the sight of the body lying on the floor, said the body was almost unrecognizable. She demanded the death penalty for the accused. The sister alleges that the attackers used household utensils and other objects to mutilate the body.

Three accused arrested

Police detained five youths on Sunday. By Monday, three teenagers aged 17 to 19 had been arrested, including a 17-year-old boy. Senior Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha stated that, given the brutality of the case, an appeal has been made to the court to prosecute the accused as adults. According to investigating officers, the victim allegedly knew one of the accused.

SIT formed to investigate the case

Additional Superintendent of Police Samir Darpan Barua stated that a case has been registered against the accused under sections 65(1), 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code, and section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Additional sections may be added as the investigation progresses. Mobile phones of several other individuals have been seized and they are being questioned. A special investigation team has been formed. Sinha stated that the accused were known to the victim and her family, but the motive for the murder is still unclear, and a thorough investigation is underway.

Following the incident, widespread protests erupted in Hailakandi and the Barak Valley. Locals blocked NH-6 and demanded the death penalty for the accused. Police have now appealed to the public not to share sensitive information.
