BSBD Zero Balance Account Rules: Typically, banks impose penalties and charges if a minimum balance is not maintained in a savings account; however, if you wish to avoid this hassle entirely, the Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) account is an excellent option for you.
Launched under the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the primary objective of this account is to make banking services easily accessible to every citizen of the country. Banks cannot levy any penalty or maintenance charges on the customer for this account, even if the balance drops to zero.
Who can open a BSBD account?
The most significant feature of a BSBD account is that there are no stringent criteria for opening it. Any citizen of the country can open this account; there are no age or income restrictions. The account can be opened easily by simply submitting government documents—such as proof of identity, proof of address, and a PAN card or Form 60. No initial deposit amount is required to open this account.
Free facilities and benefits of a BSBD account
Like regular savings accounts, BSBD account holders are provided with several essential banking facilities completely free of charge. The bank issues an ATM-cum-debit card to the BSBD account holder at no extra cost. There is no limit on the number of cash deposits; you can deposit money as many times as you wish in a month. If you already hold a regular savings account, you can request your bank to convert it into a BSBD account.
Important rules regarding the account
However, it is crucial to keep certain important rules in mind when using a BSBD account. BSBD account holders can make up to four free cash withdrawals per month. This limit encompasses ATM withdrawals, RTGS, NEFT, UPI, internet banking transfers, clearing transactions, EMI payments, and standing instructions. You cannot hold another regular savings bank account with the same bank where your BSBD account is active. If you already have a savings account, you must close it within 30 days of opening the BSBD account.
