WhatsApp DOB Update: WhatsApp confirmed on Tuesday that it is testing new methods to verify users' ages in India. According to the company, this move is being taken to comply with upcoming legal regulations, including the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act.

Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing between the central government (Ministry of IT) and the company regarding WhatsApp's proposed username feature; the government has directed that this feature be put on hold for the time being due to security concerns.

Is it mandatory to disclose your age to use WhatsApp?
Recently, several Indian users on X (formerly Twitter) shared screenshots of a WhatsApp message asking them to add their date of birth, stating that they are required to ask for the user's age under upcoming Indian laws. Both the company and the government have clarified the situation regarding this test.

Optional Test: WhatsApp has clarified that this test is entirely optional. Users are not required to confirm their age to continue using the platform.

Privacy Protection: The company has assured that users' age information will remain completely private and will not be shared with anyone else on the platform.

WhatsApp Spokesperson's Statement: A spokesperson stated, "To comply with upcoming laws in India, such as the DPDP Act, we are testing age verification methods that prioritize privacy. This will not change how WhatsApp works or alter your user experience."

IT Secretary's Stance: IT Secretary S. Krishnan stated that this move might be related to the DPDP Act, which contains strict provisions regarding age. He added that discussions would be held with companies on this matter as the deadline approaches.

DPDP Act and Strict Rules Regarding Children's Data
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act regulates the processing of digital personal data. It strikes a balance between the data privacy rights of ordinary citizens and legal requirements.

Parental Consent: Once the rules come into effect, platforms will be required to obtain verifiable consent from parents or legal guardians before processing any personal data of children under the age of 18.

Ban on Tracking and Advertising: Platforms are strictly prohibited from engaging in activities that could harm children. There will be a complete ban on monitoring children's behavior and displaying targeted advertisements to them.

Hefty Fines: Provisions exist for substantial financial penalties in the event of rule violations. Although the rule regarding verifiable consent is set to be fully implemented by May 10, 2027, companies may begin collecting data to prepare their systems in advance.

Why did the username feature spark controversy and a government notice?
WhatsApp's proposed username feature allows users to connect with each other without sharing phone numbers. However, the government has raised serious security concerns regarding this feature:

Risk of Cybercrime: In its notice, the government expressed concern that a username feature operating without phone numbers could facilitate online fraud, phishing, "digital arrest" scams, and impersonation attacks.

Responsibility for Due Diligence: The IT Ministry reminded Meta that, as a major social media intermediary, WhatsApp is bound by obligations to exercise necessary due diligence under the IT Act and associated rules.

Halt on Rollout: Following the government's directive, WhatsApp has responded that it will not launch this feature in India until discussions are concluded to the government's satisfaction.

Notices to Telegram and Signal as well: IT Secretary S. Krishnan has clarified that this issue is not limited to WhatsApp alone. The IT Ministry has also issued notices to Telegram and Signal regarding their existing username features, asking how they are addressing the risks of fraud and impersonation.

WhatsApp has approximately 500 million users in India, making the country the company's largest and most important market globally. The government will take a final decision on this only after reviewing feedback from all messaging platforms.
