Both give workers the same five statutory days. The 7-day option begins on Thursday, Feb. 4, and ends on Feb. 10, 2027, the fifth day of the new lunar year, including a weekend.

The 10-day option includes two weekends as it begins on Friday, Feb. 5, and involves swapping the next workday of Feb. 12 to Saturday, Feb. 27. That closes the gap to the following weekend and produces 10 unbroken days, Feb. 5 to Feb. 14. Workers would return to business on the 10th day of the first lunar month.

The ministry prefers the shorter break because starting two days ahead would give people working far from home more time to travel and shop. The 10-day version, it said, would compress travel demand into a much shorter window and strain the transport system, particularly in major cities and at transport hubs.

The same document sets out arrangements for Vietnam Culture Day, which falls for the first time this November. A National Assembly resolution passed in April and effective July 1 fixed the date at Nov. 24.

Because the date lands on Tuesday, the ministry proposed moving the Monday workday of Nov. 23 to Saturday, Nov. 28, creating a four-day break from Nov. 21 to 24. The alternative is a single day off with no swap. The ministry favors the longer break, saying it would let people join cultural activities and lift tourism and spending while shifting only one workday.

In 2027, when Nov. 24 falls on a Wednesday, it proposes no swap.

For National Day in 2027, civil servants and public employees would take Sept. 2 and 3, which with the weekend gives four days through Sept. 5. Private employers would grant two days, Sept. 2 plus either Sept. 1 or Sept. 3.

The ministry has asked 13 agencies to comment on the holiday proposals by Aug. 10, after which it submits its file to the prime minister for a decision.

Vietnam now has 12 paid public holidays: one for the New Year, five for Tet, one for Hung Kings Commemoration Day, one each for April 30 and May 1, two for National Day and one for Vietnam Culture Day.
