The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather advisory for Wednesday, August 5, forecasting intense rainfall activity across several regions. If you are stepping out in Maharashtra or tracking the ongoing flood situation in Odisha, here is everything you need to know about today’s weather conditions. While scattered showers have been soaking Maharashtra over the past few days, the intensity is set to spike significantly in the Konkan and Ghat regions. Meanwhile, a fresh wet spell threatens to complicate the ongoing flood relief operations in eastern India.
Maharashtra Weather Update: High Alert in Key Districts
The regional meteorological centre has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across specific pockets of Maharashtra, prompting authorities to issue severe weather warnings. While the Konkan belt and the Ghats will bear the brunt of the downpour, the rest of the state will mostly experience light to moderate showers.
If you are residing in or travelling through Maharashtra, here is the district-wise breakdown of the official IMD alerts:
Orange Alert Regions: Residents of Raigad district in the Konkan belt must brace for heavy to very heavy rainfall. A similar orange alert is firmly in place for Pune, as well as the Ghat sections of Satara and Kolhapur.
Yellow Alert Regions: Heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Additionally, the Nashik Ghats, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, and Gondia districts have been placed under a yellow alert.
Mumbai, Thane & Palghar: The financial capital Mumbai, along with its adjoining regions of Thane and Palghar, will witness moderate rainfall throughout the day.
Light to Moderate Showers: Expect mild to moderate rain and thundershowers across North Maharashtra (Dhule, Nashik, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar), Western Maharashtra (plains of Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur), and the Marathwada region (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Dharashiv).
No Alerts Issued: The weather remains relatively calm with no specific warnings for Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Wardha, Washim, Nagpur, and Yavatmal.
Odisha Flood Crisis: Fresh Rainfall Threatens Relief Operations
As Maharashtra prepares for heavy rains, the eastern state of Odisha continues to grapple with a grim flood situation. Even as water levels in several major rivers have finally begun to show a decline, countless villages remain severely inundated.
Making matters worse, the IMD has forecasted a fresh wet spell starting today, August 5, which is expected to persist continuously until August 10. This upcoming rainfall could severely hamper the ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts.
Currently, thousands of displaced residents are forced to take shelter in relief camps across the Jajpur, Bhadrak, and Jagatsinghpur districts. According to local officials, floodwaters simply refuse to drain from the impacted villages. Submerged roadways have completely cut off regional access, leaving the residents of Dasarathpur (Jajpur), Basudevpur (Bhadrak), and the Kujang and Tirtol areas (Jagatsinghpur) entirely unable to return to their homes safely. Authorities remain on high alert as they continuously monitor the incoming rain spell.
