Glasgow: A number of athletes have gone missing following the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Some athletes from several countries did not return home with their teams after the competition concluded. Police Scotland has confirmed that it has received reports of several athletes missing. An investigation is underway to establish the circumstances, and coordination is underway with the UK Home Office at an early stage.
Four Ugandan boxers did not return with the team
According to Ugandan media reports, four members of the country’s boxing team have reportedly gone missing in Glasgow. According to reports, the players were not with the Ugandan team when they were due to return home on August 4th.
Nuhu Batte, Emily Nakalema, Angel Katushabe, and Ibrahim Khemis have been named. Reports suggest that these four players did not return to Uganda with the team.
Pakistani boxer Qudratullah also missing
Meanwhile, news of the disappearance of a Pakistani boxer has further complicated the situation. According to Pakistani media reports, Qudratullah disappeared from the team hotel after his bout and did not return home with the team.
According to reports, his passport was with the team manager. Despite this, he separated from the team. Following reports of his disappearance, an investigation is underway.
An old case to Pakistani boxers is also in discussion.
Pakistani boxing team players have previously been reported to have left the team after competitions. Following the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Pakistani boxers Suleman Baloch and Nazirullah Khan left the team and went missing. At that time, their passports were reportedly in the possession of officials.
Apart from this, during the 2024 World Olympic Qualifier, Asian gold medal winning boxer Zoheb Rashid was accused of disappearing with his roommate’s foreign currency and valuables.
What did Scotland Police say?
According to Police Scotland, they have received reports of several missing players. Police are currently investigating the circumstances under which the players separated from their teams and what further action should be taken in their cases.
Police have also begun coordinating with the UK Home Office during the initial investigation. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed a specific motive for the players’ disappearance.
Around 3,000 players from 74 countries participated.
Nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 countries and territories participated in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. According to Commonwealth Sport, the Games in Glasgow included 10 sports and six Para sports.
Officials involved in the event had said that they would work closely with Police Scotland, Border Force and the UK Visa and Immigration Department to ensure the safe arrival and departure of the players.
Such cases have come to light before even after the Commonwealth Games.
The issue of athletes leaving their teams or not returning home after the Commonwealth Games is not new. Previous incidents of some athletes not returning with their teams were reported after the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The incident in Glasgow is also in the news because reports have emerged simultaneously that several players from different countries have not returned home. However, the current whereabouts of these players and their reasons for doing so are still pending the completion of an official investigation.
