Ajinkya Rahane recently retired from cricket. Speaking about young player Vaibhav Suryavanshi, he said that one shouldn’t put too much pressure on a young player based on just two IPL seasons. He also shouldn’t make hasty judgments about his Test career. Playing for the country on the field and playing in the IPL are two very different things.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi caught everyone’s attention with his explosive batting in the 2025 IPL. He set the record for the youngest player to score a century in the IPL. He then played for his team, Rajasthan Royals, in the 2026 IPL and won the Orange Cap by scoring the most runs. He scored 776 runs throughout the season. Subsequently, when the Indian team was selected for the T20 matches against Ireland and England, he became the youngest player to be included in the squad.
Performance in the series against England
Vaibhav made his international debut with a T20 match against England in Manchester. His first tour in England was a difficult one. He scored 14, 13, and 15 runs in three matches. He found it difficult to face the fast bowlers on the faster pitches in England compared to India.
He then toured Zimbabwe. In the three-match series against Zimbabwe, he scored 50 in the first match, 20 in the second, and 81 in the final. His scores in his first six international matches were 14, 13, 15, 50, 20, and 81.
Ajinkya Rahane’s advice
Following the tours of England and Zimbabwe, the question of whether Vaibhav should soon be included in India’s Test team came up. Ajinkya Rahane spoke on this issue in the “Stick to Cricket” podcast, which also featured David Lloyd, Phil Tufnell, Alastair Cook, and Michael Vaughan. Responding to Vaughan’s question, Rahane said it was difficult to say whether Vaibhav would play Tests. He added that he didn’t want to put any pressure on the young player, who has only played two IPL matches.
Rahane explained that IPL and international cricket are completely different. When you play for your country, the mental pressure is immense. He cited the example of how scoring runs in the early overs of the IPL can seem easy, but managing the situation in an international match can be challenging. He advised the young player to remain calm and play his natural game.
