New Delhi. The Central Government has approved the National Recycled Bioenergy Scheme “Gobardhan” with a total outlay of ₹23,731 crore. The scheme will help increase domestic compressed biogas production by nearly tenfold and strengthen the country’s energy security. It aims to convert agricultural residues, cow dung, press mud, municipal organic waste and other biomass resources, abundantly available in the country, into clean fuel, organic manure, rural income and national economic value.
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today approved the Gobardhan Yojana. The scheme will be implemented from FY 2026-27 to FY 2035-36 and will establish compressed biogas as a key pillar of India’s future energy mix.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav announced this during a press conference at the National Media Center on Thursday. He stated that the impact of the Gobardhan Yojana is expected to provide a new impetus to India’s clean energy economy. The plan aims to increase domestic CBD production by approximately tenfold, thereby reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthening energy self-sufficiency.
He stated that provisions such as stable pricing, capital support, and loan guarantees will increase participation by private investors, micro, small, and medium enterprises, cooperatives, and rural entrepreneurs. Scientific use of agricultural residues, dung, and organic waste will improve waste management, create new sources of income for farmers, increase organic fertilizer production, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, an integrated national framework will accelerate project implementation.
