Arsenal are reportedly prepared to tear up their wage structure in a bold attempt to sign Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, in a move that would underline their ambition to rule Europe. The Premier League champions are willing to put a record contract on the table for the Brazil international, which would make him the best-paid player Arsenal have ever had if they can secure his signing.

Arsenal’s chase for Vinicius is expected to intensify, with the club ready to hand the forward the biggest deal in their history. To persuade him to move to north London, the Gunners are prepared to go well beyond his current £400,000-a-week salary at the Bernabeu, according to The Telegraph.

The decision-makers at Arsenal are determined to build on their recent triumph after finally ending a 22-year wait to win the Premier League title. New contracts for important players such as Bukayo Saka, understood to be worth around £365,000 per week, have already raised the ceiling, but a move for Vinicius would push the club’s spending into a completely different bracket.

Although Arsenal are willing to offer Vinicius an unprecedented personal package, the transfer fee is still a major hurdle. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has set a clear financial benchmark for any possible sale of the Brazilian this summer. Los Blancos are believed to want a package totalling €160 million, including guaranteed payments and performance-related add-ons, before they would even think about letting their star winger leave.

Perez is not known for allowing key players to depart in the prime of their careers, but the situation has been made more complicated by the fact that Vinicius has entered the final 12 months of his current contract. Reports have suggested that talks over an extension in Madrid have reached a standstill, with the player said to be seeking wages in line with Kylian Mbappe.

An added twist in the story is the presence of Jose Mourinho, who has returned to Real Madrid for a second spell as head coach. Mourinho is reportedly insistent that he does not want to lose any of the biggest names in his squad as he targets the club’s 16th European Cup.

The Portuguese manager is said to be firm in his desire to keep Vinicius and preserve the core of his attack despite their previous friction. Even so, Real Madrid’s moves behind the scenes appear to suggest another possibility. By reportedly moving close to a deal worth well over €100 million for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, the Spanish giants are effectively protecting themselves and lining up a direct alternative in case the Brazilian forward departs.

For Mikel Arteta, landing the two-time Champions League winner would represent the clearest possible statement of intent. The Arsenal manager has spent years moving on high earners such as Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in order to build a sustainable and fully committed squad. He now believes the platform is there to bring in a global superstar capable of raising the team’s level even further.
