Brighton & Hove Albion have suffered a major setback ahead of the 2026-27 season after Carlos Baleba picked up an ankle ligament injury. The Cameroon international is now expected to spend a period on the sidelines, giving head coach Fabian Hurzeler a selection problem with competitive fixtures drawing near.

Midfield setback for the Seagulls

As per The Athletic, Brighton midfielder Baleba has sustained an ankle ligament injury and is now doubtful for the beginning of the 2026-27 campaign. The Cameroon international suffered the issue during pre-season training and was a notable absentee from Brighton’s friendly against Strasbourg on Saturday, a match the Premier League club won 4-3.

Although the former Lille midfielder is likely to be out for a spell, Brighton are optimistic that the injury will not rule him out for the long term. The club’s medical team are currently evaluating the 22-year-old to determine a clearer recovery schedule, but the timing of the injury is far from ideal with the new season just around the corner.

Demanding opening to the season

After upcoming pre-season matches against Roma and Bologna, Hurzeler’s team begin their competitive season on August 20 in the away leg of their Conference League qualifier against either Tromso or CFR Cluj. While qualifying for European competition is a notable milestone for Brighton, being without Baleba’s physical presence in midfield would create a significant tactical issue for that challenging away tie.

Only three days later, Brighton start their Premier League campaign at home to Aston Villa. Facing a difficult opener against Unai Emery’s side without one of their key midfield ball-winners would be a serious challenge for the Seagulls. Baleba played an important role last season, making 31 league appearances in his third year on the south coast after joining from Lille in 2023.

Transfer interest and Manchester United connection

Baleba attracted strong transfer interest from Manchester United at the end of last season, but a move for the 22-year-old did not eventually happen. The Red Devils had admired the Cameroonian’s profile for some time and viewed him as a possible long-term solution in central midfield.

Instead, the Old Trafford club chose to bolster their midfield by signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. That shift in Manchester United’s transfer approach has effectively confirmed Baleba’s immediate future at Brighton, allowing the 22-year-old to focus fully on recovering from this setback and cementing his place on the south coast.

Squad depth and new signings

Although Baleba’s injury is an early blow, Brighton have acted proactively in the transfer market to improve their squad depth. The Seagulls have already signed Luka Vuskovic, Michael Svoboda, Pascal Struijk, Costinha and Zadok Yohanna. While those arrivals give Hurzeler more tactical flexibility, replacing Baleba’s distinct mix of athletic power and defensive cover remains a major challenge for the coaching staff.
