Actor Vidya Balan marked National Handloom Day by celebrating India’s rich handloom tradition and encouraging people to support artisans by choosing authentic handwoven silk sarees.
Sharing a video on Instagram on Friday, the actress spoke about her admiration for handloom silk sarees, highlighting the craftsmanship and heritage reflected in every weave.
“What I love most about handloom silk sarees is that every bit, every motif, every little detail carries the signature of artistic skill and generations of tradition. That’s what makes each handloom silk saree truly one of a kind. On this Handloom Day, let’s celebrate the hands behind these masterpieces. And whenever you buy, look for the Silk Mark label to ensure genuine pure silk,” she said.
Vidya, who has long been associated with promoting India’s traditional textiles through her public appearances and signature saree style, also shared a heartfelt message alongside the video.
“Every handloom silk saree tells a story that no machine can ever replicate. This National Handloom Day, let’s celebrate the incredible artisans whose hands keep India’s timeless weaving traditions alive. And whenever you choose pure silk, always look for the Silk Mark, your assurance of genuine pure silk,” she wrote.
Known for consistently championing Indian textiles, Vidya used the occasion to draw attention to the importance of preserving the country’s centuries-old weaving traditions and recognising the contribution of skilled artisans.
Her message came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to appreciate, purchase and proudly wear handloom products in a video released on the eve of National Handloom Day, paying tribute to the country’s weaving community.
Vidya was last seen in the Marathi film ‘Raja Shivaji’.
