Manchester United are exploring one more low-cost addition to strengthen the depth of their squad.

United are in pursuit of yet another budget-friendly signing.

The Red Devils have had a careful summer in the market, bringing in players such as Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos while passing up the chance to spend significantly more on Matheus Fernandes — and that approach may continue.

Manager Michael Carrick wants to add further depth to his group this month, with Manchester United back in the Champions League and aiming to challenge on four fronts again.

According to Corriere di Bologna in Italy, as reported via Sport Witness, United are assessing a move for £21.7 million defender Jhon Lucumi.

Chelsea are also competing for the Colombian, who impressed at the World Cup, while Juventus already have an agreement in place with the 28-year-old but have not yet matched Bologna's relatively modest valuation.

United, however, are said to be willing to simply meet the asking price for the player, while Bournemouth, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with interest this summer, with the report describing Lucumi's departure as “inevitable”.

With Bournemouth having already completed a deal for Antonio Silva and Nottingham Forest still pursuing Ousmane Diomande, United appear to have a clearer path and can offer Champions League football — something Chelsea cannot — although they also have alternative targets.

Giorgio Scalvini has also been connected with a move in recent days, with the fellow Serie A defender able to step into midfield as well, which could appeal to Michael Carrick.

FourFourTwo understand that United have also been linked with interest in another Bologna player, Jonathan Rowe, as the Red Devils look at options to strengthen their attack as well as their defence.

With the BBC confirming that Tielemans cost only £35m and Santos £48m, United have spent just £83m in the transfer market since returning to Europe's top club competition — though they will almost certainly need to invest further to improve the squad.

Moves for Lewis Hall and Ismaila Sarr have both been looked into, with owners INEOS aiming to work within a stricter wage structure.

Lucumi's contract runs out next year, leaving Bologna under pressure to sell him now rather than risk losing him for nothing.

According to Transfermarkt, the Colombian is valued at €22m. Manchester United begin their season against Hull City.
