Chelsea wrapped up their pre-season tour with an ill-tempered draw against Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia.
There were six goals and seven yellow cards as the 90 minutes ended level, with the scheduled penalty shootout later being called off.
The home side went ahead early against the run of play, capitalising on a Chelsea back three that at times looked completely unsettled.
JDT players repeatedly flew into late challenges and took swipes off the ball, with players such as Tosin Adarabioyo growing visibly frustrated by the behaviour.
Liam Delap equalised from the penalty spot just before half-time and then, only minutes later, squandered a glorious chance to put Chelsea in front.
He made up for that after the interval with another penalty, but JDT struck twice to regain the lead in the closing minutes.
Chelsea still found time for another equaliser, with Mykhailo Mudryk’s cross being diverted into his own net by Antonio Glauder.
A penalty shootout had been planned to decide the contest, but the CFC+ commentary team indicated that rising tempers led to the spot-kicks being abandoned.
The Daily Mail’s Kieran Gill reported that Kevin Campello, Chelsea’s head of first-team operations, was heard saying, “it’s written in the contract”, amid confusion over whether the penalty shootout would go ahead.
