The government has spent ₹5,875.27 crore so far on the Khelo India Scheme, launched in 2017 to strengthen India’s sports presence. An allocation of ₹924.35 crore has also been made for 2026–27. Athletes selected under this scheme receive financial assistance of ₹6.28 lakh per year from the government.
The government spent ₹3,790.50 crore on Khelo India between 2021-22 and 2025-26. Three major events—the Asian Games, the Olympics, and the Commonwealth Games—were held during this period. Let’s find out how many medals Khelo India athletes won at these games.
Won 42 medals in Asian Games
India won a record-breaking 107 medals at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This marked the first time in Asian Games history that India surpassed the 100-medal mark. According to the Sports Ministry, 124 Khelo India athletes participated in Hangzhou and won a total of 42 medals.
28 Khelo India athletes went to the Olympics
India sent a contingent of 117 athletes to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Sports Ministry stated that 28 of these athletes were from Khelo India. However, none of them won a medal. India won a total of 6 medals at the Paris Olympics. Manu Bhaker won 2 medals. After winning bronze in the 10m air pistol event, she also achieved a podium finish in the 10m air pistol mixed team event with Sarabjot Singh. Neeraj Chopra, Ahman Sehrawat, Swapnil Kusale, and the Indian hockey team also returned with medals.
24 Khelo India athletes participated in the Paris Paralympics, winning six medals. India’s total medal tally at the Paris Paralympics was 29.
Only 2 medalists in Commonwealth Games
India won 39 medals, including 13 gold, at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Sports like shooting, badminton, wrestling, hockey, and cricket were not included in Glasgow. Despite this, India performed well, finishing fourth in the medal tally.
Speaking of the performance of Khelo India athletes at this year’s Commonwealth Games, they won only two medals. Boxer Arundhati Choudhary won the gold medal in the 70 kg category. Ashmita Dey won the gold medal in judo. This marked the first time India had won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in judo.
