Cristian Romero is reportedly open to a move across North London to join Tottenham Hotspur’s fiercest rivals.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is said to be willing to join North London rivals Arsenal this summer, according to a report by transfer journalist Ekrem Konur.

Arsenal have moved into the market for defensive cover after William Saliba sustained a long-term back injury while playing for France at the 2026 World Cup.

Saliba’s absence has left Mikel Arteta light on options in central defence as Arsenal aim to retain their Premier League title.

Romero has reportedly indicated to Tottenham’s management that he wants to leave the club before the transfer window shuts.

A move to the Emirates Stadium would allow the 28-year-old Argentina international to stay in London while also playing UEFA Champions League football with the current domestic champions.

Even so, Tottenham’s decision-makers would naturally be unwilling to sell one of the key figures in their squad to a local rival, even if his departure has looked possible for some time.

Spurs would rather see him move abroad, with LaLiga side Atletico Madrid having previously shown interest.

Any official approach from Arsenal would almost certainly be met with strong resistance from supporters of both clubs.

From Tottenham’s side, agreeing to sell Romero to Arsenal would invite criticism from fans, mainly because it would strengthen a direct rival and revive memories of previous transfers between the two North London clubs.

There is also doubt among sections of the Arsenal fanbase over Romero as a target. His poor disciplinary record in the Premier League, along with his behaviour for the Argentina national team during their recent World Cup campaign, has only pushed many English supporters further away from the idea.

In FourFourTwo’s view, Romero joining Arsenal would upset quite a few people, to put it mildly.

It could even become a transfer comparable to Sol Campbell’s 2001 move, and the bitterness that followed that switch.
