The Tamil Nadu Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution making it mandatory to sing the state anthem ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ at the beginning of government programmes. This is being seen as a challenge by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay against the Centre’s directive to play the national anthem ‘Vande Mataram’ before the opening songs. While moving the resolution in the Assembly, CM Vijay said that the Tamil song should be given top priority in the state. Later, both DMK and AIADMK supported the resolution. Speaker JCD Prabhakar announced that the resolution has been passed and no further approval is required for its implementation.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Rupani wrote in a post on Twitter, “Tamil is not just a language; it is an idea, a culture and a civilization. Moreover, Tamil is our life and our spirit, and the Tamil Nadu government has fully understood this. Moreover, this historic resolution is the biggest tribute to Mother Tamil, which preserves and protects the Tamil language and the feelings of the Tamil people towards the antiquity, uniqueness, pride and excellence of the language. The day this resolution was passed will always be remembered in the history of Tamil Nadu. I express my heartfelt gratitude to all political parties for unanimously supporting and passing this resolution. May the fame of ‘Mother Tamil’ resonate all over the world! May the victorious journey of Tamil Nadu continue!”
Presenting the resolution in the assembly, CM Vijay said that ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ should be given top priority in the state. He said, “Tamil means pride, Tamil means strength. As soon as you say ‘Tamil’, the entire Tamil Nadu stands together. ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ should be given first place in Tamil Nadu. It is the right of our state to give ‘Tamil Thai Vazhthu’ first place.” He urged all MLAs to support the resolution by putting aside political differences, stressing that the TVK government will not compromise in protecting the dignity of the state anthem.
The resolution states that Tamil is one of the oldest classical languages in the world and Tamil civilization represents one of the oldest cultural traditions in the world. It also mentions the history of “Tamil Thai Vazhthu”, which dates back to the play “Manomanamiyam” written by Manomanamiyam Sundaranar in 1891. A government order issued on November 23, 1970, directed that the song be sung first at government functions. On December 12, 2021, “Tamil Thai Vazhthu” was officially given the status of the state anthem, making it mandatory to sing it before functions in educational institutions, universities, government offices, public sector undertakings and other public institutions in Tamil Nadu.
