Barcelona may be prompted to launch a fresh move for a Manchester United player whose future is still far from clear.

Barcelona could find themselves back in the transfer market after a setback on the training ground involving young forward Roony Bardghji.

The Sweden international is said to have suffered a serious knee injury during training, leaving the field in pain and increasing concerns over a lengthy lay-off.

After that unexpected blow, the Catalan club could now renew their interest in Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.

Rashford spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Spotify Camp Nou, providing attacking cover across Hansi Flick’s front line.

While Barcelona had the option to make the England international’s move permanent at the end of that loan spell, they decided not to trigger the buyout clause earlier in the summer transfer window and instead completed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

Even so, Rashford’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains unresolved. His relationship with sections of the Manchester United support has become strained over recent seasons, meaning both player and club could still be open to going their separate ways before the transfer deadline.

Signing Rashford would not represent a straight swap for Bardghji. The Swedish youngster usually plays as a right-sided winger, while Rashford is most effective when drifting in from the left.

Even so, bringing the 28-year-old back into the squad would give Flick greater tactical flexibility.

With new arrival Gordon expected to begin on the left, Rashford’s signing would give Los Cules the option of fielding both English players on opposite flanks, while also allowing Spain World Cup star Lamine Yamal some rest after a long summer of international football.

A return for Rashford, potentially on loan once again, would also provide valuable cover if Yamal were to pick up an injury.

Considering Barcelona’s financial limitations and the timing of Bardghji’s injury, a permanent move for Rashford appears less probable.

Instead, Barcelona may look to put together another season-long loan agreement with Manchester United rather than pursue an outright purchase, which would involve a major outlay they have previously been reluctant to make.
