Every person definitely has some dream in his life. Someone wants to open a small cafe amidst the mountains, someone wants to make his mark in a big city and someone just wants his life to be run by his own decisions. But then love knocks in life. And this is where the real trouble begins. Is it love to compromise with your dreams for love or injustice to yourself?

‘Musafir Cafe’ on Netflix turns this question into an interesting, slightly sweet and slightly bitter story. The story revolves around three characters who have their own dreams in their hearts, but life brings them to a crossroads where love and dreams are seen standing face to face.

Chandar and Sudha: There was love, but the goals were different.

Chander Mohan Sharma and Sudha Tripathi are at the center of the story. Both become friends, then friendship gradually turns into love. That means the same old formula – first talks, then meetings and then the heart says, ‘Sir, now the matter has gone out of hand.’ Sudha is an independent girl and very serious about her career. She is a divorce lawyer and her dream is to set up her own strong law firm in Mumbai. She wants to live life on her own terms.

On the other side is Chandar. His dream is not a gleaming corporate building or a big salary. He wants mountains, books, chatting with passers-by and opening a cafe where along with a cup of tea, he can get two or four couplets for free. That means Sudha wants Mumbai and Chander wants mountains. There was love between them, but there were two destinations.

When a man in love starts shortening his dream…

The most interesting part of the story comes when Sudha gets a job opportunity in Mumbai. Chandar feels that if Sudha is going to Mumbai then he should also go with her. Chander’s decision here looks very romantic. “Where you are, I am there…” But Sudha thinks this is nonsense and says that your dreams are different from mine in the mountains and Sudha says that I will come to meet you. But when Chander asks for marriage, Suja thinks that Chander is strangling her dreams out of love for her. Chandar says that she will get a job in the big city, he will live with her, everything will be fine. But Sudha’s question is much bigger than this. If you give up your dream for me, then tomorrow the blame for this decision will also fall on me and this is where ‘Musafir Cafe’ moves from being a mere love story to the real court of relationships.

Does love mean ‘I will give up everything for you’?

Our films have created a beautiful, but sometimes dangerous narrative of love. Hero says-‘I will leave the world for you.’ The heroine says- ‘Life is incomplete without you.’ There is applause, music plays in the background and we feel that love cannot be more beautiful than this. But just open the window of life and look. If a person gives up his dream for you, will you be able to bear the burden of that decision for the rest of your life? Walking together in love is beautiful, but erasing your entire identity for someone is probably not love, it is surrender and Sudha understands this.

‘Musafir Cafe’ from Chandar’s diary

When Sudha sees Chandar’s dream diary, she not only reads his dreams but also tries to understand them. She gives a name to Chandar’s dream – ‘Musafir Café.’ A destination where travelers come, stay for a while, drink tea, tell their story and then leave towards their destination. Perhaps this is the most beautiful metaphor of this story. Some people come into life as travelers and not as destinations. They show you the way, give voice to the dreams buried within you and then at some point they themselves take a different path.

Then Sudha left…and Chandar became Devdas!

Now comes that part of love in the story, seeing which the mind says – ‘Brother, what is so much sorrow!’ Sudha goes after her dreams and Chandar starts dissolving the wounds in his heart in a glass of wine. The beard grows, the pain increases and the man’s style becomes a little Devdas, a little Kabir Singh type. But the real twist of the story is that Chandar ultimately turns his broken heart into his strength. He returns to his old dream.

Musafir sets out to make his dream of a cafe come true. That is, the dream which he was once about to leave to go with Sudha, the same dream finally brings him back to himself. But here the story shows another mirror… Now Preeti comes into Chandar’s life. Preeti, who is in love with Chandar and is compromising for him, although Chandan tells her from time to time that you too should not compromise your dreams for anyone. Chander’s dream of opening a cafe amidst the mountains and Sudha’s dream of opening a law firm has come true but the story still has a big shock left, that is the dream of Sudha’s new lover Vineet and Chander’s current girlfriend Preeti’s dream who will be seen facing off against Mohammed in the second series.
