Supreme Court on SIR Hearing: Supreme Court Opinion on West Bengal SIR Case: The Supreme Court has issued important directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI). It has been directed to provide information about the outcome of appeals of those whose names were excluded from the electoral roll in West Bengal during the Election Commission's Special Scrutiny (SIR) process.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant issued a notice to the Election Commission on a petition filed by Congress (INC) leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary. The petition demanded setting up of SIR tribunals in each taluk of West Bengal and timely disposal of appeals.

Regarding the Supreme Court's SIR decision, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary said that due to the SIR in Bengal, the Election Commission claimed that 2.7 lakh people were disenfranchised, but in reality 3.4 lakh people were disenfranchised. The judge of the Bengal High Court has himself admitted that, at the rate at which the case is decided, it will take at least 21 years and will cause hardship to entire families. If the name is not in the list, the ration is stopped and no benefit is given.

Need for a change in methodology

While hearing the matter, a bench headed by Justice Suryakant said that if the tribunal set up to handle the matter does not perform as expected, changes can be made in its procedure. A lot of time has passed in this case, so the Tribunal needs to assess how many cases have been disposed of so far. Responding to this comment, the lawyer representing the West Bengal government said that they will soon present the complete information before the court.

Supreme Court Notice

A bench headed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court issued a notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in connection with the alleged misuse of oral observations by judges. The petition alleged that the judge's oral observations and cues were being misused during the hearing.

The petition also claimed the existence of fake lawyers and fake law degrees in the country. There has also been a demand for a CBI inquiry into the entire matter. The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Central Government, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Bar Council of India and CBI. The next hearing of this case will be held on September 10.
