Arudchelvan Karnan was handed five charges on Aug. 12, including two counts of harassment, as well as charges for causing annoyance while intoxicated in a public place, unauthorized entry into a protected place and causing hurt, The Straits Times reported.

According to court documents, Karnan was allegedly intoxicated and shouting loudly at Gate C17 of the airport on July 20, disturbing people nearby.

He allegedly hurled vulgarities at a female airport staff member and accused her of being racist.

After being told he would be offloaded from a Scoot flight, Karnan allegedly charged onto the aerobridge before pushing past another female staff member with such force that she fell and was injured, AsiaOne reported.

The incident resulted in the flight to Kuala Lumpur being delayed by 45 minutes, police said on Aug. 11.

Karnan appeared in court on Aug. 12 and said he wanted to engage a lawyer.

His case is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 19.

If convicted of causing annoyance while intoxicated in a public place, Karnan could be fined up to S$1,000 (US$780) and jailed for up to six months.

Using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour carries a fine of up to S$5,000.

Unauthorized entry into a protected place is punishable by a fine of up to S$20,000, up to two years in jail, or both.
