These are the shoes my aching feet want me to wear.

By the time I’m making dinner most days, my feet are throbbing. Between marching all day on my walking pad, exercising in the gym, running on the tennis court or simply standing around cooking or washing dishes, my poor feet have usually carried me through hours of toil. This level of activity aggravates my plantar fasciitis; so after a podiatrist instructed me to wear shoes around the clock at home, I took to sporting sneakers around my apartment. Amazon carries several brands of recovery sandals, but I’m already a long-time fan of Denmark's classic clogswhich support me through hours on my feet at the pottery studio. Needless to say, the Dansko Devyn slides were an immediate add to cart. Recovery slides may look like regular sandals, but they’re specifically engineered to provide active relief to sore and tired feet. If you also stand or walk for a lot of the day, or enjoy hiking on the weekends, recovery slides are a great option.

I have wider feet and average arches, which means that the Denmark Devyns are a great option for me. Other popular recovery slides are contoured too dramatically, which actually strains the arch of my foot further. These are mildly sloped, just enough that my feet are supported and massaged without feeling strained, and the rocker sole gives me just enough energy to keep moving at the end of the day. Dansko shoes are weighty across the brand’s designs, and these are no exception—the cushiony foam is surprisingly dense—but I like how stable my feet feel with the extra weight. Recovery slides claim to provide comfort for your feet, but I was pleasantly surprised to feel relief in my lower back and leg muscles after wearing the Devyns for a few hours, too.

As I mentioned, Dansko clogs, a favorite among chefs and healthcare workers, are roomy around the ankle and toe box so body weight can be distributed evenly, no matter one’s gait. And I have wider feet than average, so I always appreciate a little extra wiggle room.

But if you’re on the fence about what size you need, I recommend sizing down, especially if you have narrow feet. The shoe’s sizing chart displays European sizing as well; so when in doubt, break out your measuring tape and see if that helps hone in on the right target size.
