N. Chandrashekaran resigned as chairman of Tata Sons

One of India’s most iconic business conglomerates, the Tata Group, is set to undergo a major leadership change. Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran has resigned from his post. However, his resignation will not take effect immediately. He will continue as chairman till the end of his current tenure, i.e. till February 2027. After his resignation, debates over the selection of a new chairman in the Tata Group have intensified.

N. Chandrasekaran took charge of Tata Sons in January 2017. Prior to this, he served as the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Under his leadership, the Tata Group has expanded rapidly into many new areas over the past decade. The group has made significant investments in sectors such as airlines, semiconductors, electronics, batteries, digital businesses and defence. The acquisition of Air India was also one of the most important decisions of the Tata Group during his tenure.

Chandrasekaran’s resignation comes at a time when Tata Sons is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting (AGM) on August 18. His re-appointment as director was considered in this meeting. Since his position as chairman was linked to his membership on the Tata Sons board, the meeting was considered important. Currently, the Tata Group has not announced his successor. The big question now is: Who will take over the reins of Tata Sons after February 2027?

For some time now, between Tata Sons and Tata Trust N. There are reports of differences over Chandrasekaran’s tenure. The two sides are said to be at odds over issues such as group strategy, investment in new businesses, capital requirements and the future direction of Tata Sons. Tata Trusts owns approximately 66% of Tata Sons. Therefore, the role of the trust is considered important in deciding the future of the chairman.
