New Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle has told supporters that success will not arrive instantly after a summer of major changes to the squad.

Jaissle has cautioned Newcastle fans that progress is unlikely to be immediate after a turbulent summer transfer window. Although he said he remains extremely ambitious after succeeding Eddie Howe, he also accepted that the club is going through a significant transition following the high-profile exits of several important players and a move towards recruiting elite young talent.

Ambitious approach amid major squad transition

Speaking at his official unveiling on Tuesday, Jaissle faced the media for the first time since taking charge at St James' Park. As reported by The Independent, he understands the scale of the task in front of him after a summer in which captain Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon departed.

Newcastle have also altered their transfer policy, signing three outfield players aged under 22: Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba. In spite of the loss of experience, the 38-year-old remains positive about what lies ahead. He said: "We are ambitious. That’s the most important thing, also why I decided to come here. But this will not happen overnight."

Finding solutions to replace departing stars

The exits have left a clear gap in the dressing room, increasing the pressure on the existing squad to rise to the occasion. Jaissle admitted the effect of losing such influential figures, but made it clear he would not focus on the negatives.

He said: "The players who left the club, they were great players, great characters, experienced players and this is now a vacuum. Other players need to step in. It’s a big challenge, always when there’s a transition period, but it’s no time to complain. It doesn’t make sense to see the negative things. We want to see the chance in that situation and that’s our approach from day one." The German also confirmed that he has not yet named a new permanent captain.

Getting the best out of the current squad

Alongside exploring possible new signings such as Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jaissle is concentrating on improving the players already available to him. That includes striker Nick Woltemade, who arrived at Newcastle 12 months ago for a club-record fee of £69 million.

Woltemade scored five goals in his first eight appearances, but was unable to sustain that form. Speaking about the striker's situation, the head coach said: "I saw that he had a difficult period. From the first day, we talked a lot, he should leave the past behind. It’s something he cannot change. We are just looking forward. We find solutions, we do our best. Not only with Nick, with all the other players as well."

What comes next for Newcastle and Jaissle?

Jaissle will now try to build momentum after Newcastle recorded a 2-1 friendly win over Valencia during their recent training camp in Spain. They now face a quick turnaround, with a trip to Edinburgh to play Everton in a pre-season match on Wednesday. He will use these final preparations to assess the squad before the new Premier League season begins.
