Toyota GR GT Could Get an A80 Supra-Style Targa Roof Variant, Says Report

Could Toyota be preparing to expand the GR GT line-up with a removable-roof version? That is the suggestion from Japanese publication Magazine X, which says a new GR GT variant featuring a so-called “Aero Top” targa roof is currently under development.

We would advise taking this claim with a fair amount of caution, as the report does not name any sources or even indicate where the information has originated. Even so, Toyota does have a long-standing history of offering targa-top versions of its performance models, so the idea of an open-top GR GT is not entirely beyond the realm of possibility for the manufacturer.

The same report from Magazine X also states that a “tuned version” of the GR GT is on the way. If we were to speculate, that would likely mean a GRMN version of the GR GT. Toyota has already hinted that a more hardcore road-going derivative of the GR GT could appear, potentially featuring aerodynamics inspired by the GT3 race car. Compared to the targa-roof claim, this version of the GR GT appears far more plausible, especially since such a vehicle has already been spotted undergoing testing.

The “Aero Top” name itself carries some heritage within the Toyota line-up. Many enthusiasts will already know that the Mk4 Supra was sold in Aerotop form alongside the fixed-roof version. We certainly would not object to Toyota reviving that badge if a targa version of the GR GT eventually becomes reality. Even so, the Magazine X report suggests there may be a wait ahead, with the expected “announcement date” currently forecast for 2027 or later. Put simply, it may be another year or two before any further details emerge.
