Leeds United lost on penalties to Manchester United after a 1-1 draw at Croke Park, with the Boyle Sports Trophy ultimately settled from the spot. James Trafford made a strong impression on his first appearance, but it was United who walked away with the silverware.
As per the player ratings, Willy Gnonto was awarded nine out of 10, while James Trafford and Dan James both received eight. Jayden Bogle and captain Jaka Bijol, meanwhile, were each marked four.
Leeds came into the match after three successive pre-season victories against Sunderland, Liverpool and Leipzig, in front of a crowd of 82,000. Trafford was named in goal before Daniel Farke made 10 substitutions at half-time, with Sebastiaan Bornauw the only player to remain on the pitch.
Joshua Zirkzee gave Manchester United the lead, but Brenden Aaronson brought Leeds level with an excellent first touch and finish after Dan James won possession and played him in.
In the penalty shootout, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach, Willy Gnonto and Noah Okafor all scored. Harry Wilson missed Leeds' second penalty and James Justin struck the crossbar, allowing Manchester United to secure the trophy.
In the rest of the ratings, Tarik Muharemovic and Ao Tanaka turned in steady displays, while Sean Longstaff and Lukas Nmecha had quieter evenings. Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon made a positive impact off the bench, Alex Cairns was dependable, and Alfie Cresswell made an important block. Calvert-Lewin also appeared a greater attacking threat than Nmecha.
