On Wednesday, there was a huge uproar in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament House in the country's capital New Delhi, when a controversy arose over a comment made regarding dress. A heated debate broke out between Communist Party of India (Marxist) i.e. CPI(M) MP John Brittas and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Sushmita Dev over the 'Lungiwala' comment. The controversy gained momentum when CPM leader John Brittas filed a formal notice of Breach of Privilege against the BJP MP. What is the whole matter and how did the controversy start? The entire incident started when CPM MP John Brittas alleged that when he was presenting his legislative proposal in the House on Monday, a member of the ruling party made objectionable remarks on his attire and repeatedly addressed him as 'Lungiwala'. Expressing strong objection to this, John Brittas, while speaking in the House, said that he is proud to be an Indian, a South Indian and especially a Malayali. He said that he loves his language, culture, food and traditional clothes very much. Taking names in the House, Brittas alleged that a respected member harassed her during her duty inside the House and took a jibe at her attire. He said that ideological debate and political differences are part of the House, but calling an MP 'Lungiwala' in this manner is completely indecent. BJP MP Sushmita Dev denied the allegations. On the other hand, BJP MP Sushmita Dev completely rejected all the allegations made by John Brittas. He clarified that neither he nor any other member of the House has made any derogatory remarks against the attire of any state or territory. He also said that he is fully prepared to personally talk to John Brittas to clear this misunderstanding. Meanwhile, in view of the increasing tension in the House, Leader of the House JP Nadda proposed that both the MPs can sit in his chamber and talk to clear this misunderstanding. Chairman CP Radhakrishnan gave strict advice: To maintain dignity in the House, Chairman CP Radhakrishnan took a tough stance and advised all the honorable members to exercise restraint. The Chairman said that he has witnessed some incidents where members have made indecent and rude comments on other members during their speeches in the House. He cautioned all members to avoid anything that might hurt the sentiments of co-members. Chairman CP Radhakrishnan further said that our Indian culture is very unique which includes the regional cultures of different regions of the country. He made it clear that the cultural traditions and regional identity of our partners should never be disrespected. In the end, the Chairman also invited that if any member has any complaint or point, they can come to his room and discuss.
