As India gears up for a crucial two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting August 15 in Galle, former spinner Murali Kartik has reignited the debate over Kuldeep Yadav's place in the Test side. Speaking during a virtual media interaction organized by Sony Sports Network, Kartik expressed strong views on how Kuldeep has been handled, particularly during India's five-Test tour of England.
"Where is Kuldeep? Where is Kuldeep?" Kartik recalled, pointing out how fans and experts kept asking the same question throughout the England series, yet Kuldeep remained on the sidelines. According to Kartik, Kuldeep has been a proven match-winner for India, taking wickets in different countries, but he hasn't received the consistent backing needed to flourish.
Kartik also noted that Ravindra Jadeja is now in the twilight of his career, which makes Kuldeep's role even more significant. "Is he the leader of the spin attack, or is it going to be someone else?" he asked. He dismissed concerns over Kuldeep's batting, saying he is capable with the bat and should be judged solely as a bowler.
"What a wonderful bowler, a match-winner," Kartik emphasized, but stressed that Kuldeep needs to be handled well. Injuries have troubled him, and under the previous regime of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, he didn't get a consistent run. With India currently fifth in the WTC standings and needing a strong result in Sri Lanka to stay in contention for the 2027 final, Kartik believes the time has come for the management to give Kuldeep a clear, defined role and back him fully.
