Not everyone can put the tricolor on the car

Many rules have been given in the Flag Code of India, 2002 regarding the use of the tricolor in India. This flag code is applicable from 26 January 2002. It is noteworthy that before 2002, the rules for hoisting the tricolor were under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act, 1950 and Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971.

Let us tell you that common citizens are not allowed to put the national flag on their personal car or bike. However, people holding some constitutional posts have been allowed to put the tricolor on their vehicles. These include the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Union Minister, Chief Minister and some other senior constitutional officers. Official representatives of India abroad are also allowed to display the tricolor on their vehicles as per the prescribed rules.

Correct way to put tricolor on vehicle

Let us tell you that there are some rules for those who are allowed to put the tricolor on their vehicles. The tricolor is placed on the right side of the vehicle. If a dignitary from another country is also present in the car, then the flag of India is placed on the right side and the flag of the other country is placed on the left side. The tricolor should be installed in such a way that it does not touch the ground, the bottom of the vehicle or any other object. It is important to always keep the flag in a respectable position.

Changes have been made in the Flag Code of India from time to time. Earlier, hand-woven and spun khadi was given preference for the tricolor. Now machine made tricolor of cotton, wool, silk and polyester can also be used. Earlier the national flag was allowed to be flown only from sunrise to sunset. Now, with proper respect and lighting, it can be hoisted even at night.

Avoid plastic tricolor

It is the responsibility of every citizen to respect the tricolor. Plastic flags should not be used. It is against the rules to tear, dirty or keep the tricolor in a damaged condition. The national flag should not be used for any decoration or advertisement. Violation of the rules can result in a jail term of up to 3 years, fine or both under the law.

Keep these things in mind while hoisting the tricolor

• If you want to put up the tricolor on Independence Day, then always keep it clean and in perfect condition.

• Do not put a torn or dirty flag.

• Protect the Tricolor from falling on the ground or getting buried under the vehicle.

• Make arrangements for adequate lighting when the flag is displayed at night.
