Aerial firing during August 14 celebrations in Karachi, woman killed, 94 injured

Weapons (guns and pistols) are waved in the air in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, during the celebrations and fireworks on the Independence Day celebrations on August 14 in Pakistan. Firing took place. One woman died and at least 94 people were injured in such incidents at various places. Edhi Foundation spokesperson confirmed this. He said on Friday morning that 10 women and 17 children were also among the injured. The injured were taken to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Center Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

According to reports by The News, Duniya News and Geo News, this morning hospitals gave details of the injured brought in overnight. 24 patients came to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, including one woman, four children and 19 men. 35 people were brought to Jinnah Hospital, including three children, four women and 28 men. 26 patients were treated in the trauma center of the civil hospital. These include 10 children, four women and 12 men.

According to officials, people opened fire in the air during the country’s Independence Day (August 14) celebrations in Lyari, Sadar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defense Colony. Police said they have arrested 30 suspects in this connection from Eastern, Western and Central districts of Karachi. All of them were arrested in Khwaja Ajmer Nagri, Samanabad, Rizvia Society and Sir Syed Police Station area. Weapons were also recovered from many of them.

Police said that the woman injured by the bullet died in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The police have arrested the accused. He is the woman’s cousin. In recent years, there have been several casualties due to firing in the air during Independence Day celebrations in Karachi. Similar incidents in 2025 resulted in three deaths and at least 75 injuries. Around 95 people were injured in firing incidents in the air during Independence Day celebrations in 2024.

As the clock struck 12 midnight and August 14 began, the people of Karachi took to the streets and rooftops to celebrate the anniversary of independence on August 14, 1947, Dunya News reported. During the celebration, shots were fired in the air. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the nation on Independence Day. He said Pakistan was paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country in the shadow of a “historic victory”.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed a function to celebrate Independence Day in Islamabad. He said that today the country remembers the sacrifices of its founding generation. He said that every drop of water is a very sensitive issue for Pakistan. If India messes up on the water issue, a befitting reply will be given. Shahbaz said that the first priority of his government is to give new opportunities for development to the young generation.
