On August 15, 1947, India gained its independence from the British Raj which ruled the country for nearly 190 years. The countru became independence after various forms of resistance by freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Rani Lakshmibai.
