Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons a Big Draw in Telugu

Tamil star Suriya has once again managed to draw good openings in the Telugu states with his latest release ‘Vishwanath & Sons’, according to a leading distributor.
The film has reportedly collected around Rs 6.5 crore on its opening day in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “The day-one openings are good and much better than those of several second-tier Telugu heroes,” says the distributor.
He believes Suriya’s promotional efforts in the Telugu states played a key role in attracting audiences. “The film got fewer theatres because several movies are already doing well, yet Suriya managed to bring decent footfalls. His promotions also helped create awareness about the film,” he adds.
Suriya plays a 40-year-old bachelor who is against marriage, while Mamitha Baiju plays a 20-year-old girl who enters his life and falls in love with him. “The premise is interesting, but the execution could have been much better,” the distributor observes.
The performances, however, have received appreciation. Suriya, Mamitha Baiju and Radhika Sarathkumar deliver strong performances, with Mamitha particularly standing out as a bubbly young woman who also gets an opportunity to showcase her softer side.
“The second half loses focus, which takes away from the impact of what could have been a mature love story. A tighter screenplay and better handling of the narrative would have helped the film sustain audience interest,” the distributor adds.
Mamitha Baiju, meanwhile, continues to establish herself as one of the promising young actresses working across Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam cinema.
