Itanagar, 15 August 2026: There has been huge damage in two separate disasters caused by heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh. Four laborers have died in a landslide at a road construction site in Upper Subansiri district, while five soldiers have gone missing after two army shelters were erected due to the sudden flood in Dibang Valley. Following both the incidents, large-scale search and rescue operations are being conducted on a war footing.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, both these tragedies occurred on Friday evening. There was a sudden major landslide due to heavy rains at the Keozharing-Byaching road construction site in the district. Some workers working there were buried due to a large amount of debris falling from the mountain. Four people named Tadu Baqi, Taji Rai, Markosh Basumtari and Babul Ali are reported to have died in this accident. According to the Disaster Management Officer, the dead body of Babul Ali has been found, while the search for others is going on. Teams of Nacho Police Station, Fire and Emergency Service and SDRF have been deployed at the spot for relief and rescue operations.

'Pashu Pani' army camp was engulfed by the sudden swell that came after heavy rains on Friday evening in Dibang Valley district. Due to the strong current of the flood, two shelters of the 5th Grenadiers were destroyed and seven soldiers of the army were destroyed. Two of them have been rescued safely, but five are still missing.

The five missing soldiers include Havildar Upendra and army personnel Kundan, Vinod, Aditya and Samunda. Apart from two rescue teams of 5th Grenadiers, 58th battalion of ITBP, 62 RCC of GREF, local volunteers and Arunachal Pradesh Police are engaged in searching for them. Another SDRF team from Pasighat has also left for Anini to join the rescue operation.
