New Delhi . Fitness is often linked to body size and weight, but being healthy doesn't just mean looking thin. A person may have normal weight, yet his physical capacity may be weak. Similarly, despite being slightly overweight, a person can do daily tasks easily and his physical capacity can be good. Therefore, to understand fitness, it is important to pay attention to the physical function of the body.
An important indicator of true fitness is the ease with which a person is able to perform everyday tasks. Feeling extremely tired after climbing stairs, walking a short distance, lifting objects or doing normal physical exertion can indicate the body's capacity. If you start feeling tired sooner during normal activities than before, then it should not be ignored.
Excessive shortness of breath during walking or general activity can also be a fitness- sign. Although there can be many different reasons behind shortness of breath, a person cannot be considered unwell on the basis of this one symptom alone. If such problem persists or suddenly increases during normal activities, it is advisable to seek medical advice.
Fitness includes not only cardio ability but also body strength, flexibility and balance. Being able to bend easily, turn the body in a controlled manner and maintain balance during normal activities are considered signs of good physical ability. Maintaining balance and muscle strength becomes even more important as we age.
Regular physical activity and strength training can help maintain body function. The purpose of exercise should not be only to lose weight or make the body attractive. Strong muscles help in maintaining body stability and better movements along with making everyday tasks easier.
Resting heart rate is also considered an indicator of health, but it alone cannot be used as a measure of fitness. Heart rate can vary due to age, physical activity, medications, and other conditions. If the heart rate continues to be abnormal or other problems are experienced, medical evaluation may be necessary.
Blood pressure also gives important information about the internal health of the body. Just by looking from outside, it cannot be determined whether a person's blood pressure is normal or not. Therefore, it is useful to get blood pressure checked from time to time. It is not advisable to ignore persistent abnormal blood pressure.
Indicators such as blood sugar and cholesterol are also important in understanding overall health. Their condition is not determined only by body weight. Some health risks may be present even in a person of normal weight, while not all indicators are necessarily abnormal in an overweight person.
Good sleep is also an important part of fitness. Adequate and quality sleep helps in relaxing the body and maintaining mental and physical functionality. Chronic lack of sleep can lead to fatigue, decreased concentration, and impact on daily activities.
Mental health also cannot be separated from fitness. Persistent stress, irritability, sadness or loss of interest in everyday activities can be a sign of mental health problems. Regular physical activity can also be beneficial for mental health.

So real fitness does not just mean less weight or attractive body. It is important to pay attention to body strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, sleep, mental state and health indicators. It is more important to understand how well your body is functioning in everyday life rather than just looking at it in the mirror.
