New Delhi: The controversy that broke out over Vande Mataram at the Congress headquarters on Independence Day has now taken legal form. BJP leaders on Sunday lodged a formal complaint against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi at Urwa police station in Karnataka.
BJP lodged complaint
BJP leaders allege that senior party leaders were talking among themselves while the national song Vande Mataram was being sung at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi on August 15. After the video surfaced, BJP called it an insult to the national anthem.
BJP leaders Vikas and Rajagopal, who lodged the complaint at Urwa police station, said that the police can register an FIR under BNSS. The case has not been registered yet. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari also targeted the Congress leadership. He said that Congress has a problem with the national anthem and does not respect it.
Suvendu Adhikari and Amit Shah’s attack
West Bengal leader Suvendu Adhikari first raised the issue. He alleged that Sonia Gandhi had objected to singing the full version of Vande Mataram at the Independence Day programme.
The people of Bengal, the land of Bankim Chandra, are deeply saddened by this. The officer asked Sonia Gandhi to tender an unconditional apology. Also sought clarification from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as to what is the party’s opinion on this.
He warned that if apology is not given there will be a big protest. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also attacked Congress in the rally in Chittorgarh. He said, “We all saw it on TV. Sonia Gandhi stopped the song midway.”
Shah demanded that Congress should apologize to the people of the country and the author of Vande Mataram, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. Shah alleged that Congress has forgotten Vande Mataram in the name of vote bank politics.
What is the reason for the dispute?
The video of the program of August 15 at Congress headquarters went viral. In this, many senior leaders were seen talking among themselves while Vande Mataram was being played. BJP termed it as disrespect towards the national anthem. The controversy comes at a time when Parliament passed the “Prevention of Insults to National Honor Amendment Bill 2026” last month.
Now, like the national anthem, Vande Mataram has also got special protection in this law. BJP says that insulting the national song is a direct insult to the country. There has been no official response from Congress on this yet.
