The Nissan Kicks has never really been the company’s most performance-focused model. In fact, the 141-hp four-cylinder Kicks is the brand’s most affordable and smallest crossover. That gives it an important role in Nissan’s volume-car business now that the Versa is no longer in the line-up, but it has not especially stood out for much else. From this summer, however, that is set to change with the arrival of a new soft-roading version.
Known as the 2027 Nissan Kicks Rock Creek, this tougher-looking compact model certainly has the visual attitude of a crossover designed to venture a little farther beyond the tarmac than the standard version. Buyers hoping for something comparable to the Ford Bronco Sport’s Sasquatch packages may come away underwhelmed, though, because the Rock Creek package does not bring any major performance upgrades that were not already available on a Kicks.
Instead, the key mechanical feature is standard all-wheel drive, which is already offered as an option on other Kicks variants. Exterior changes include distinctive 17-inch wheels, gloss black trim details, amber-tinted running lights, and package-specific seats in the cabin. Even so, the Rock Creek does get an exclusive off-road driving mode and a hill descent control system. At the same time, the prominently styled roof rack is rated to carry 165 pounds, which does make it possible to haul camping gear, although it limits the practicality for a rooftop tent.
Overall, the package is not enough to turn the modest Kicks into something prepared for the country’s toughest trails. Still, it does add a measure of extra capability, added style, and the reassurance of AWD to a crossover that is more likely to appeal to a younger buyer concerned about getting to and from a campsite. And at $30,385 including destination charge, the comparatively low starting price makes the Rock Creek notably more attainable than some of its more capable rivals.
