Defeated world champion player Shi Yuchi in the first round
There were major upsets in the BWF World Championship on the first day of the tournament on Monday. In men's singles, India's young player Ayush Shetty surprised everyone by defeating world number-1 player Shi Yuchi. He showed tremendous performance and defeated China's number-1 player. Ayush is participating in the biggest tournament of badminton for the first time. Coach Vimal Kumar had asked Ayush Shetty during preparation in Bengaluru to set his target and wrote – '17th August is a bad day for Shi Yuchi'. This statement of the coach proved to be true.
This was a message that coach Vimal wanted Ayush to see every day as often as he looks in the mirror. On Monday, Ayush did exactly that and defeated Shi Yuchi soundly. 21 year old Ayush Shetty, resident of Karkala, Karnataka, made his presence felt with a bang. He defeated defending champion and world No. 1 Shi Yuchi 21-14, 13-21, 21-19 and was eliminated from the tournament. Displaying excellent smashes and excellent defence, Ayush achieved the biggest win of his career amidst tremendous support from the home crowd.
