Business Desk – YouTube Views Update: The platform has announced a big change regarding YouTube Views. From August 24, 2026, YouTube will adopt a single method of counting views for all types of videos. This will include both long videos i.e. long-form videos and shorts.

Under the new rule, as soon as the video plays and its first frame is visible, a view will be added. There will be no requirement of any minimum watch time for this. YouTube says that after this change, the total views of creators may increase rapidly in future.

What is going to change from 24th August?

Currently, the system of counting views has been different for different video formats. According to YouTube, several types of view counting systems were used on the platform. These are now being brought into a single standard, making it easier for both creators and brands to understand the actual reach of the video.

In the new system, views will be counted as soon as the first frame of the video appears. That is, there will be no minimum time set for how long the viewer watched the video. YouTube says that this arrangement was first started for Shorts and now it is being extended to all video formats.

Creators will see more views

According to YouTube, after the new rule, creators may see more views on their videos than before. The platform says that equalizing views will help creators show the actual reach of their content on YouTube.

A big advantage of this can be in Brand Deals. According to YouTube, when views for all videos are measured the same way, it will be easier for creators to demonstrate their reach and value to brand partners.

No impact on YouTube's monetization system

Regarding this change, the question in the minds of many creators is whether the new View Count will affect the earnings of YouTube Partner Program i.e. YPP? YouTube has clarified that the change in the way views are counted will have no impact on YPP.

That is, just because the view count of the video increases, it will not be assumed that the creator will earn in the same proportion. YouTube's existing monetization terms and standards will remain in place.

Why did the debate erupt on the internet?

After the announcement of YouTube's new View Count system, a debate has started among creators on the internet. Some creators are considering this a positive change, while others fear that seeing more views may make it difficult to understand the real quality of the video and the interest of the audience.

YouTuber ArtChad claimed that this change could affect the earnings of many YouTubers. According to him, most YouTubers earn from brand integration and watch duration is important in this. Their argument is that if views increase rapidly but people do not watch the video for long, then the average watch duration may appear lower.

Some creators expressed fear of declining earnings

Another YouTuber Miles Above Tech has also expressed concern about this change. He says that in the long run this may affect the earnings of the creators. However, he also indicated that if the new View Count does not have a negative impact on RPM i.e. earnings per thousand views, then this change could prove to be very beneficial for creators making long videos.

Will AutoPlay also add View?

A creator has claimed that during a conversation with YouTube, he got information that views can be counted even if the video plays automatically on the homepage. However, there is no detailed explanation regarding this claim in the information available from YouTube. Therefore, for now it should be considered as the creator's claim only.

If views are added on autoplay also, then there may be a significant increase in the total views of the video after the new system. This can change the reach figures especially from the homepage.

Engaged Views will tell you who stayed

Along with increasing views, YouTube has also said that it will continue the existing metric of Engaged Views. This will be very important for the creators. In the new system, views can be added as soon as the video plays, but Engaged Views will help in understanding how many viewers decided to watch the video after it started and remained engaged further.

This means that after August 24, the total views may be more visible, but to understand the actual viewer interest of the video, creators will have to pay attention to other figures like Engaged Views and Watch Duration instead of relying only on Views.
