Liverpool are aiming to add a marquee attacker before the transfer window shuts.
Liverpool have agreed terms with a Paris Saint-Germain forward – and it is not Bradley Barcola.
The Reds have been strongly linked with the World Cup star throughout the summer, but with PSG still dragging their feet over accepting a nine-figure fee for the attacker, FourFourTwo understands Liverpool are hesitant and weighing up every possible option.
Although the Merseyside club have already agreed a contract with Barcola, the genuine possibility of missing out on him has pushed them towards one of his PSG team-mates.
Liverpool have admired Barcola since the beginning of the window, but they have not ruled out a move for Ibrahim Mbaye, with RMC Sport now reporting that terms have been agreed with the youngster.
As per that report, talks over Barcola are still ongoing – but with a five-year deal now settled with Mbaye, Liverpool are also stepping up their pursuit of the Senegalese teenager.
Paris Saint-Germain have been busy reshaping their attack this transfer window, first allowing Goncalo Ramos to leave for Ruben Amorim's Milan, before stepping up moves in recent days for World Cup final hero Ferran Torres and highly rated Ajax youngster Mika Godts.
Last season, first-choice forwards Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele scored 52 goals between them across all competitions, while Barcola scored 13 and Mbaye managed just three.
However, even though Barcola made more appearances across Ligue 1, the Coupe de France and the Champions League than any other player in Les Parisiens' attack, he was mostly a back-up option – and the same was true of Mbaye – with manager Luis Enrique sticking to a clear formula in the biggest matches.
Dembele, in particular, started only 10 league games for the eventual French champions, who have doubled down on that approach this summer by bringing in elite depth behind their star names in order to preserve them for decisive European fixtures.
FourFourTwo understands that both Barcola and Mbaye are interested in moves to the Premier League, where the pathway under Andoni Iraola is clearer and the competition for places is slightly less intense.
So far, the Reds have only signed Spanish winger Victor Munoz to strengthen their attack, having lost the legendary Mohamed Salah during the summer.
Liverpool clearly have plenty of left-wing options, with Victor Munoz, Rio Ngumoha, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz all capable of operating on that side, while Mbaye could offer an option on the right.
According to Transfermarkt, Mbaye is valued at €30 million. Liverpool face Newcastle United in the opening match of the Premier League season.
