New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced that all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in the state will be provided with new cars to help them travel across their constituencies and address public concerns more effectively.

Making the announcement in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Vijay said legislators need regular mobility to stay connected with people and respond to local issues. The government will provide vehicles to support their constituency- work.

MLAs to receive monthly financial support

Along with vehicles, MLAs will also receive ₹75,000 per month to cover driver salaries and car- expenses. The state government has further announced ₹25,000 monthly assistance for hiring an office assistant for each MLA's office to improve administrative support.

The decision came after VCK MLA Jothimani raised concerns that legislators require better logistical facilities to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Demand for official vehicles raised in Assembly

A senior DMK MLA said that successive governments had overlooked similar demands due to financial concerns. The legislator highlighted that local body representatives such as mayors and municipal officials already receive official vehicles, while MLAs have traditionally managed without such facilities.

According to legislators, the lack of dedicated vehicles affects their ability to travel frequently, especially during public events and emergency situations.

Government announces healthcare initiatives

Apart from MLA support measures, the Tamil Nadu government also announced major healthcare- initiatives.

The state has allocated ₹351 crore to expand medical education capacity, with plans to create 6,098 additional seats across medical, nursing and paramedical courses. The government will also establish seven new nursing colleges. A 400-bed multi-specialty hospital will be built in Perambalur at an estimated cost of ₹300 crore.

Health insurance coverage increase proposed

The government has proposed increasing the annual treatment limit under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh.

Additional medical and surgical services for transgender persons will also be included under the expanded healthcare programme.
