Real Madrid continued with their behind-closed-doors presentations for the club’s new summer signings on Tuesday.
After head coach Jose Mourinho introduced the club’s new private presentation format earlier this week, it was Bernardo Silva’s turn to be officially unveiled this morning.
The 32-year-old Portugal international arrived as a free agent after his contract with Manchester City came to an end.
Although he had already featured in pre-season friendlies, his formal presentation had still not taken place and was finally completed today.
Bernardo’s presentation ceremony
Bernardo’s presentation was held today.
Bernardo was received by club president Florentino Perez in the boardroom at Valdebebas. The pair watched a video prepared by Real Madrid that looked back at the midfielder’s career and his path to the Spanish giants.
Bernardo then signed the contract that will keep him at Real Madrid for the next two seasons, until June 30, 2028.
Following the signing, Bernardo Silva was presented with a replica of the stadium, a watch and a Real Madrid shirt carrying his name and the No. 20.
Honorary president Jose Martinez Pirri was also present at the ceremony.
Unlike Mourinho, who attended his own ceremony on his own, Bernardo Silva was joined by his wife and daughter for the private presentation.
Key role under Mourinho
Even though he only arrived a few weeks ago, it has already become clear that Bernardo is expected to play an important role in Mourinho’s team.
Set for a major role under Mourinho.
The Portuguese manager plans to deploy his compatriot in a deeper midfield role, alongside either Federico Valverde or Aurelien Tchouameni.
After missing out on signing a midfield conductor such as Rodri, who opted to join Barcelona, Mourinho and Real Madrid view Bernardo as a player capable of taking on that responsibility within the current squad.
At the same time, the 32-year-old Portugal international will also provide an option on the right wing and in the No. 10 role because of his versatility.
If there is no change in plans, the experienced playmaker is expected to start for Real Madrid in their opening match against RCD Espanyol.
Interestingly, Bernardo had also been on Barcelona’s radar, but he ultimately signed for Real Madrid, with Mourinho and their mutual agent Jorge Mendes believed to have played a key part in getting the deal done.
