Deep Look

Fever win fifth consecutive game

TORONTO — Kelsey Mitchell scored 29 points and Caitlin Clark added 24 as the Indiana Fever defeated the Toronto Tempo 101-95 Tuesday.

Indiana never trailed and extended its winning streak to five games.

The Fever have now won 10 of their past 12 contests.

Toronto mounted a fourth-quarter challenge but could not overcome Indiana’s early advantage.

Mitchell dominates opening quarter

Mitchell scored 16 points in the first quarter and continued producing throughout the next two periods.

She added eight points in less than one minute late in the third.

Shortly afterward, Mitchell left for the locker room and did not return.

Fever coach Stephanie White said Mitchell became “overheated.”

She finished with 29 points despite sitting out the entire fourth quarter.

Clark and Mitchell set WNBA record

Clark and Mitchell each scored at least 20 points in the same game for the 16th time this season.

That established a WNBA record for a pair of teammates.

Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter previously held the mark after reaching 20 points together 15 times for the Phoenix Mercury in 2008.

The achievement highlights the consistency of Indiana’s leading backcourt scorers.

Mitchell ties historic scoring streak

Mitchell has now scored at least 20 points in 20 consecutive games.

She matched Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson for the longest 20-point streak in WNBA history.

Mitchell reached the milestone before leaving because of the heat- issue.

Her availability will remain important as Indiana pursues a strong position for the playoffs.

Fever receives balanced scoring

Aliyah Boston scored 16 points for Indiana.

Sophie Cunningham made all three of her 3-point attempts and finished with 13.

Their contributions gave the Fever four double-digit scorers and helped compensate for Mitchell’s fourth-quarter absence.

Indiana reached 101 points despite playing the final period without its leading scorer.

Toronto makes late push

Marina Mabrey made consecutive 3-pointers late in the fourth quarter to reduce Indiana’s lead to 97-93.

The Tempo could not close the margin further.

Mabrey led Toronto with 22 points.

Brittney Sykes scored 15 in her return from a lengthy injury absence, but Toronto suffered its 11th consecutive defeat.

Morrow posts double-double

Aneesah Morrow contributed 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Tempo.

Temi Fagbenle added 13 points, while Kiki Rice scored 10.

Toronto received production from several players but could not overcome Indiana’s efficient offense.

The Tempo’s inability to take a lead extended their prolonged losing streak.

Mitchell and Mabrey receive technical fouls

Mitchell and Mabrey clashed early in the third quarter.

Officials issued technical fouls to both players.

The confrontation did not disrupt Mitchell’s offensive performance, as she later scored eight points in under a minute.

Mabrey remained central to Toronto’s late comeback attempt.

Cunningham receives mixed reception

Fans produced a mixture of cheers and boos when Cunningham entered during Indiana’s first visit to Toronto this season.

They cheered when she missed her first free-throw attempt.

Cunningham said in an ESPN profile published last month that she opposed transgender girls and women participating in girls’ and women’s sports.

Her comments shaped the crowd’s response throughout the game.

Fans show transgender support

During a fourth-quarter timeout, spectators cheered when the arena’s video screen showed a person holding a banner supporting transgender rights.

Before the game, a small group gathered near the stadium’s west entrance.

The group allowed people to take photographs in front of a banner displaying Cunningham’s image.

The demonstrations added a political and social dimension to the Fever’s visit.

Sykes returns after two months

Sykes played for the first time in more than two months.

She had been sidelined with an injury to the plantar fascia in her left foot.

Her previous appearance came during Toronto’s June 16 loss at Indiana.

Sykes scored 15 points in her return, providing an encouraging performance despite the Tempo’s defeat.
