Ederson has said he still does not “know what really happened” with the failed Manchester United medical, but is delighted to have signed a new contract with Atalanta. “This club really wanted me.”
The midfielder had already agreed a move to Manchester United in June for around €45m, with the plan being to complete the transfer after his 2026 World Cup campaign with Brazil.
However, when the Premier League club identified concerns over his knee during the medical, they cancelled the move altogether, and he instead signed a new deal in Bergamo running until 2031.
BERGAMO, ITALY – MARCH 22: Ederson of Atalanta BC reacts during the Serie A match between Atalanta BC and Hellas Verona FC at Gewiss Stadium on March 22, 2026 in Bergamo, Italy.
“I am very happy to stay at Atalanta, and I really thank the club and Luca Percassi,” Ederson said during a press conference ahead of tomorrow’s Conference League play-off against Hapoel Tel-Aviv.
“They called me many times, I felt they were close to me, but even though there was interest from other clubs, after everything that happened, I felt it was best to remain with the people who really wanted me, and that was always Atalanta.
“I was happy to wear the shirt that has given me so much joy.”
BERGAMO, ITALY – APRIL 22: Ederson of Atalanta BC celebrates with his team-mates after his goal, which was later ruled out by VAR, during the Coppa Italia match between Atalanta BC and SS Lazio at New Balance Arena on April 22, 2026 in Bergamo, Italy.
Manchester United’s decision to pull out of the Ederson transfer came as a complete surprise to Atalanta, as both the club and the player insist there was no serious injury that would justify such a dramatic reversal.
Instead, Atalanta handed him a new contract, and he is now also a candidate to wear the captain’s armband.
“I had wonderful moments going to the World Cup with Brazil, and then… I still honestly do not know what happened, but the important thing is that I managed the situation, came back with the right mentality and gave everything to the club that has given me so much.
“I am still Ederson, everyone here knows me and knows what I can do, and they know I will always give my all.”
ROME, ITALY – FEBRUARY 14: Ederson celebrates with his Atalanta BC team-mates after scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot during the Serie A match between SS Lazio and Atalanta BC at Stadio Olimpico on February 14, 2026 in Rome, Italy.
The player also spoke to Sky Sport Italia about the Manchester United situation, which many believed may have been an excuse for the club to change its mind.
“I honestly do not know what happened. There was always interest from other clubs, and I could have gone to another English club. The tests went well, I do not know what changed. I have been at Atalanta for four years and I have always played.
“I could simply have waited to see what would happen, but the excellent relationship with the club convinced me to stay and sign a new contract.”
Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli said Ederson is their “best new signing” of the summer, while supporters were delighted to see him stay.
“I thank the fans, they are always so passionate and they stand by you in good times and bad. We won the Europa League, had great results, and they know me,” Ederson added.
“I do not see myself as a new signing, I have always been an Atalanta player.”
